The top cyber-attack vectors identified during the Covid-19 pandemic

According to a 2021 report published by CrowdStrike, supply chain attacks, ransomware, data extortion, and nation-state threats are some of the most commonly used cyber-attack vectors identified during the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic. The top industries affected by these attacks, specifically ransomware attacks that use data extortion tactics, were industry and engineering, manufacturing, technology, retail and healthcare sectors. The increase of these attacks can also be attributed to the undeniable growth in the popularity of remote work, which opened the door to threat actors seeking new ways to infiltrate organizations.

 

An article published by Help Net Security based on CrowdStrike’s report indicates that two of the most popular attack vectors identified recently are the supply chain attack which allows malicious threat actors to act on multiple fronts using one attack, and nation-state attacks, in which malicious actors targeted networks to steal valuable Covid-19 related data.

 

CrowdStrike’s recommendations in facing these cyber-attacks include:

  • Visibility and response times; security teams must be aware of the need to secure cloud environments by increasing visibility and proactively facing potential vulnerabilities.
  • Implement Multifactor authentication (MFA) on all services and portals used by employees.
  • Making sure to invest in expert threat hunting that will uncover the attacks.
  • Use threat intelligence to understand the attacker and use this knowledge to prevent attacks.
  • Update your cyber security policy to address remote work.
  • Make sure that your organization implements a cybersecurity culture.
